Born in 1973, Todd lives and works in Auckland. She trained and worked in commercial photography before graduating from Elam School of Fine Arts, The University of Auckland in 2001. She was the winner of the Walters Art Prize, judged by Harald Szeemann, in 2002. Todd uses the same techniques required in commercial photographic studio portrait and product shoots. However, instead of using them to create a sense of perfection, Todd creates images that are disquietingly a little bit off and not quite right. Portraits of women as female characters are altered to create unsettling portraits filled with gawky 80s nostalgia, empty gazes and poses, big hair and teeth. and a shiny gloss that covers everything. Manipulating and changing the familiar through costume, aspects of performance and cliché, Todd explores conventions of beauty and parodies portraiture as product placement.
Todd is represented by Ivan Anthony Gallery , Auckland, Peter McLeavey Gallery , Wellington and Ryan Renshaw , Brisbane, Australia. Dead Starlets Assoc. by Yvonne Todd showcases images from the four series to 2007. The book also features an interview with the artist by Robert Leonard and is available from Amazon .
